In Scotland, it’s not rare to be asked to make curtains for arched windows. Unusually shaped windows like that are quite common here.

Older properties can boast anything from double-height bay windows to dormer windows set in coombed ceilings. Contemporary homes may have apex or trapezoid windows or bifold doors, designed to maximise light.

Treatments like curtains or blinds for arched windows and other unusually shaped windows often have to be bespoke. Mostly because they can be too complex for providers from the high street.

In this case, an existing customer was looking for a creative solution for the arched window in their guest bedroom. As each window has its own individual shape, this was the perfect project for a curtain maker.

Taking their existing interior design and the room layout into account, I suggested pinch pleated curtains which would sit inside the window recess. This way the curtains frame the arched window perfectly while letting enough light into the room.

They chose a pretty linen from Susie Watson Designs and to underline the playful design of the fabric, we decided to add a pompom edge trim to the leading edges of the curtains. They look fabulous!

What the client says

I’m rather proud of the curtains. They’re beautifully made and make a real feature of the window and the view. I love how the light filters through the pompoms.
