As their children left home, this couple was thinking about downsizing their large family house in the west of Edinburgh. However, they felt that most of their existing furniture was not compatible with the style and size of their new, smaller home.

With the house handed over as a blank canvas by the builder, they asked for my help. They wanted my advice to make sure they stamp their personality and style on their new home. The wife’s recent ill-health meant that they had to adopt a relatively hands-off approach during the implementation phase of the interior design.

The couple loved the colour teal, so we worked with a palette ranging from pale duck egg in the living room and kitchen through to a stronger teal in the master bedroom to create a harmonious flow through the house. The large downstairs toilet cried out for an injection of colour and personality. So we went a little crazy with hot pink wallpaper. The hummingbird pattern echoes the one on the master bedroom curtains.

During this downsizing exercise, I also specified the furniture layout and sourced stylish contemporary furniture, lighting and soft furnishings.

Additionally, I upgraded the builder’s standard electrical layout. I also incorporated bespoke joinery work to make the most of limited space and provide extra storage.

The result is a stylish and practical home which maximises the use of space.

What the client says

We definitely couldn’t have done this move without Catherine’s help. She freed me from worrying about the decoration of our new home, which meant that I could focus on regaining my health.
