My clients had bought a large single storey house in Edinburgh which was very much a blank canvas with white painted walls and outdated lighting. With my help, the couple were keen to stamp their own personality on their Edinburgh interior design.

This was a very collaborative project. My clients were confident in their style and taste to purchase works of art and commission pieces of furniture. But they wanted to rely on my expertise to create new colour schemes, and specify lighting, curtains and soft furnishings.

The couple also asked me to redesign the electrical layouts in the house so they’d meet 21st-century requirements.

The inspiration for their new Edinburgh interior design were items they already owned and loved as well as some of their more recent purchases. In the master bedroom, for example, Yves Delorme bed linen inspired the blue and white colour scheme.

A leather armchair in the living room was the starting point for adding vibrant handmade curtains in a Harlequin fabric. Wall lights with purple fabric shades pick up one of the colours in the curtain fabric.

In contrast, the decor in the dining room was kept deliberately low key to showcase bespoke furniture by Max McCance and a large copper pendant light I sourced to hang over the dining table.

A lot of the design work was iterative. For example, the husband asked me to source some flambeaux-style lights to illuminate a large picture in the hall. This then led to a request to identify some wall lights which would tie in with the style of the flambeaux, and so on.

The result is an unfussy, comfortable yet contemporary interior décor that very much reflects my clients’ style and tastes.
